Charters Towers Australia Day Celebrations

Back

The community is invited to help celebrate Australia Day by coming together to reflect, respect and celebrate.

Celebrations will commence at 9am on Wednesday, 26 January with an Awards Ceremony at the newly renovated Charters Towers Racecourse.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said the Australia Day Awards allow us to acknowledge the great work of our community members, groups and organisations.

“It is important that we recognise those who are committed to improving our region and the Awards are a great way to do this”, said Mayor Beveridge.

The Australia Day celebrations will also include a Citizenship Ceremony to welcome new citizens from Papua New Guinea and the Philippines to our Region.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said he’s delighted to welcome Australia Day Ambassador Jay Larkins, Director of Brisbane’s Paralympic Football Program, to the region to be part of the local celebrations.

“Jay’s ‘never say never’ attitude has been inspirational to many participants in the Program, with four athletes representing Australia and others working towards selection for the Australian Paralympic football team.

“His visit will allow residents to hear from a very passionate, dedicated and inspiring Australian,” said Mayor Beveridge.

A pool party is also planned at the Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool from 11am - 2pm.

Entry is free and will include morning tea and sausage sizzle, as well as mini golf and pool inflatable to keep everyone entertained.

“Australia Day is a time for all Australians, including our amazing communities, to celebrate our nation, its achievements and most of all, its people,” he said.

The Australia Day Celebrations are assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.
