Charters Towers’ first Road Suction Sweeper hits the streets

Word on the street is there’s a new truck sweeping the streets clean in Charters Towers.

Charters Towers Regional Council recently took possession of a new custom built Road Suction Sweeper that will be used throughout the region.

The Rosmech Scarab Mistral Road Suction Sweeper was chosen for its quietness, fuel efficiency and greater manoeuvrability around objects such as cars, trees and road signage, explains Councillor Barr, whose portfolio includes Waste Management.

“The Road Suction Sweeper is a much needed asset in maintaining better environmental cleaning solutions across Council.

“The truck has been branded to showcase our great Region with images of the mighty Burdekin River and the wonderful view from Towers Hill,” Cr Barr said.

Initially the Road Suction Sweeper will undertake a full clean of Charters Towers streets with kerb and channel taking approximately 8 weeks, then it will be used daily for general upkeep, construction works and road vehicle accidents.

This suction sweeper will also be servicing the townships of Greenvale, Pentland, Homestead and Ravenswood on a regular basis.

“I look forward to seeing it out and about across the Region, on the roads and in the streets keeping our spaces clean of debris and litter.

“It will also be cleaning our stormwater pits before and after the rain, which will help with potential flooding,” Cr Barr says.

Council has upskilled two existing employees to operate the Suction Sweeper, explains Mayor Frank Beveridge.

“Our current team, do a fantastic job in keeping our streets clean and tidy all year round and this will complement our current team members with an added service level to keep the town looking great,” said Mayor Beveridge.

The Suction Sweeper is a cost-effective addition to Council’s existing processes thanks to it’s ability to provide high pressure cleaning to street furniture, a task that the crew previously did by hand.
