Council to close non-essential services

Charters Towers Regional Council has announced it will abide by the new restrictions established by the Federal Government and in addition close all non-essential services.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer and Local Disaster Coordinator, Aaron Johansson, said closures are a precaution only.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has created extraordinary times for Australia and our community. To do our part to flatten the curve and reduce the likelihood of exposure to COVID-19 and ensure the wellbeing of staff and the community we will close non-essential services.

“This is a precaution only, as we have no confirmed cases of Coronavirus in our Region. It’s especially important that we limit potential exposure for our community as more than 25% of our population are aged 60 and over in our Region,” said Mr Johansson.

To abide by the new restrictions the below facilities will close on the following dates and times until further notice:

  • World Theatre Complex – 12Midday 23 March 2020 (today)
  • Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool - 25 metre heated indoor pool – 12Midday 23 March 2020 (today)

In addition, the below facilities will also close on the following dates and times until further notice:

  • Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool (outdoor pools) and all other township pools – Close of business 23 March 2020 (today)
  • Visitor Information Centre – Close of business 23 March 2020 (today)
  • Library and all community facilities (Arthur Titley Centre, Gold and Beef Rooms, etc) – Close of business Wednesday, 25 March 2020
  • City Hall – Close of business Wednesday, 25 March 2020

“I want to assure the community that essential services will continue to be maintained. Council is well prepared to continue to operate water, sewerage, waste collection, parks and other open spaces.

“Council will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation carefully and are working very closely with Queensland Health to stay up-to-date with the latest information.

“The Local Disaster Management Group are meeting regularly to stay aware of the evolving situation.

“I encourage everyone to heed the advice of the Australian and Queensland Governments and to ensure proper personal hygiene, practice social distancing and to avoid any non-essential gatherings.

“If you start to feel unwell and develop any symptoms at all, but especially a fever or shortness of breath, a cough or a respiratory illness, you should seek immediate medical attention.

“Call ahead to your GP or emergency department and tell them about your symptoms and your recent travel or close contact with someone who has travelled, so they can prepare for your visit,” said Mr Johansson.
