Ask before your start when undertaking building or plumbing works

Charters Towers Regional Council is encouraging the community to ask the question “do I need a permit to do that?” when undertaking building and plumbing works.

The push comes to ensure community safety and help residents avoid issues when buying or selling properties.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Johansson, said he wants the community to be aware of permitting requirements.

“There are regulations which govern building and plumbing to assist owners and builders ensure works meet relevant Australian Standards.

“Unlawful building and plumbing can have huge impacts on owners when trying to buy or sell properties. Nobody wants to get to a point where they are trying to sell their house but realise it does not comply with the legislation.

“Compliance with the Building Act 1975 and Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 ensures the safety of the community and avoids future issues.

“Please do your research and ask Council if you need a permit before work commences,” said Mr Johansson.

Building works that may require a permit include:

  • house renovations;
  • shed erections;
  • re-roofing;
  • re-stumping;
  • installing a pool and fence; or
  • building near or over Council services such as sewers and drains.

Residents should also seek approval of plumbing and drainage works including:

  • new plumbing;
  • septic tanks; and
  • on-site sewerage.

Where necessary, Show Cause Notices, Enforcement Notices and fines may be issued for unlawful buildings and building works carried out by an unlicensed tradesman.
