Charters Towers Regional Council has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Wandarra Pty Ltd to support a strategy to develop an Integrated Hemp Cultivation facility in the region.

Wandarra Pty Ltd is a subsidiary of a global company which has extensive experience in the production of cannabinoid medicines. It is their intention to trial and manufacture hemp based medicines, food products and fibre crops in the Charters Towers region.

The MOU establishes a formal arrangement for the planning and implementation of the strategy, which will provide significant benefit to the Charters Towers Region and community.

As part of the MOU, Council has committed to provide a Project Lead, who will be the contact point for Council and engage and support the Strategy.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the MOU is the first step towards the development of a hemp facility within the Charters Towers Region.

“Council is excited to be working with Wandarra to bring this project into fruition. Having a hemp facility within our region will provide economic and employment opportunities for our community.

“Our region is ideally suited for this kind of project as we have great soil, ideal weather, a skilled workforce and are situated on the cross-roads of the Overlander’s Way - Flinders Highway and the Great Inland Way - Gregory Developmental Road,” said the Mayor.

Following the development of the Strategy, an ideal site will be identified to establish a beta growing program. It is intended that Wandarra Pty Ltd and Council will enter into a formal contract.
