Happy ending for left behind dog

Back

After seven long weeks in the Charters Towers Pound, Shelby, a five-and-a-half-year-old Cattle dog mix, has found her new forever home.

In December 2019, Shelby was handed over to Council as her family were relocating overseas and couldn’t take her with them.

Council Rangers struggled to rehome the Cattle dog even after advertising her through all their usual channels, including contacting animal rescue groups.

The Rangers called upon The Northern Miner to promote Shelby in the ‘Pet of the Week’ section in January and placed free ads on Gumtree in an attempt to find a new forever home.

With a ‘never give up’ attitude, the Rangers continued to advertise and last week, Shelby was rehomed with a new loving family.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said Council Rangers go above and beyond to assist pets to find new homes.

“Shelby’s story highlights the dedication and effort our Rangers put in every day for the community.

Our Rangers go above and beyond to rehome animals. They do a fantastic job, which can be a very difficult and thankless job at times,” said the Mayor.

Shelby has now been renamed – Norma Jean and has the companionship of two other dogs and is enjoying her new-found life.

Council regularly has forgotten and abandoned animals which can be adopted. For more information about adoption or to view pound animals visit www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au/pound
