Charters Towers Regional Council has purchased three parcels of land totalling 777-hectares, on Stockroute Road, west of Sellheim.

The land which borders the banks of the Burdekin River, has been earmarked for future economic development opportunities.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the land purchase is an opportunity for the community to prosper.

“Council’s very pleased we could work with the owners to secure the properties. This is a substantial investment for Council and one we believe will provide benefits for our entire region.

“In the past, we’ve had various economic development opportunities that couldn’t be acted on as we didn’t have the land available.

“Having this land available will provide opportunities for progression of industry within the Region.

“We will pursue strategic initiatives, including incentivising selected industry projects which will drive economic development and grow our regional employment base,” said the Mayor.

Council made the decision to purchase the properties in a special meeting on 19 December 2019.

The acquisition of the land is a strategic investment for Council and aligns with key objectives as outlined in the Corporate Plan 2018-2023.

Moving forward, Council will develop a Master Plan to outline what specific industries are best suited to develop the land and in the best interests of our Region.
