2020 Australia Day Award winners announced

Charters Towers Regional Council has announced the winners of the 2020 Australia Day Awards which were held at the World Theatre on 24 January 2020.

A total of 43 individual nominations were received by Council in 8 categories.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said it was fantastic to see so many great community members nominated this year.

“The Australia Day Awards is a great event to honour our community members. We were able to recognise and celebrate the wonderful things our community members do for our Region.

“I want to thank all the nominees and the winners for their contributions to our community. I also want to thank our special guest Australia Day Ambassador, Professor Peter Leggat.”

Allan Georgee was named Citizen of the Year for his outstanding service to the local community through his involvement with Towers Players and local sports.

Georgia Brier was named Young Citizen of the Year for her work as a Youth Management Team member at PCYC and her dedication as a Junior School Captain at Charters Towers State High.

Lesley Crocker was named Cultural Person of the Year for being an energetic and passionate ambassador for the arts, especially music.

Kurtis West was named Young Cultural Person of the Year for his active work in instrumental music, singing, dancing and drama in the community.

Kate Hastie was named Sports Administrator of the Year for her involvement and support of local sporting clubs and groups.

Kayla Russell was named Sportsperson of the Year for her many sporting achievements as a show jumper, roper and for being named a top 6 rider in Queensland and competing in the top 18 in Australia.  

Stephanie Lowe was named Young Sportsperson of the Year for her high-level achievement in softball, having been selected for the U18 Women's Qld team and the All Australian Schoolgirls Softball Team.

The Community Event of the Year was awarded to Classical Towers, which brought 200 people to the lawns of Trafalgar Station for a beautiful concert by classical musicians.

A special “Certificate of Achievement” Award was given to Bob Read for his 44 years of continual service to Council and the community. Bob oversaw many projects at Council and will officially retire in March 2020.
