Get Ready for this storm season

Back

Charters Towers Regional Council is encouraging residents to be prepared this storm season. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ a weather event will occur in our region.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said we need to be well prepared for storm season.

“With the devastating fires happening around the country it can be hard to shift our focus to storm season, however, we need to be prepared and not become complacent.

“Last year our region experienced multiple storms which blew over trees, caused structural damage to buildings, power outages and major flooding, which cut off our roads and caused severe damage.

“Now is the time to get ready. In the event a severe weather event strikes, we want the region to be well prepared,” Mayor Schmidt said.

Get Ready Queensland provides resources and tips to help residents be prepared. Step 1 is making an emergency and evacuation plan to ensure everyone in your household knows what to do in case of an emergency.

Step 2 is packing supplies so that in the event of major disruptions to services basic needs are met, including food, water and medications. Your emergency kit needs to contain a collection of essential items that will equip your household for at least three days.

Step 3 is ensuring home and contents insurance is up-to-date and provides enough coverage to replace items and cover the costs of rebuilding if necessary.
