Celebrate Australia Day 2020

Back

The community is invited to celebrate the achievements of our unsung heroes at the Australia Day Awards 2020.

The Australia Day Awards Program offers us the opportunity to recognise the valuable achievements of individuals who contribute to our region.

The ceremony will be held at the World Theatre from 7pm on Friday, 24 January 2020 and will include guest speaker, Australia Day Ambassador Professor Peter Leggat. This event is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.

Professor Leggatt is a professor in Public Health and Tropical Medicine and has more than three decades of experience in medicine and higher education. He also serves as a Director of multiple health and safety organisations.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the Australia Day Awards acknowledge and reward our community.

“The Awards allow us to acknowledge the great work of our community members, groups and organisations who are committed to improving our region’s lifestyle.

“Holding the Awards on the Friday night provides a formal event separate from the informal activities on the 26th. It also allows the community to attend the awards without conflict with the Goldfield Ashes.

“I want to encourage the community to attend the awards to acknowledge and support our nominees.”

Australia Day celebrations will continue 26 January with a free pool party at the Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool.

Starting at 9am the celebrations will include face painting, balloon animals, inflatable races, live music and some great food, including a sausage sizzle.

“Come and have some fun in the pool and some great food. It’s a great way to cool off and celebrate being Australian,” said Mayor Liz Schmidt.
