Live Export Forum to take place in Charters Towers

Anyone with an interest in live export, beef cattle or associated industries are being encouraged to register for the ‘Live Export Forum’ taking place in Charters Towers on Wednesday, 19 May 2021.

Charters Towers Regional Council has organised the event in response to the proposed industry changes outlined in the Federal Government’s recently released Cost recovery implementation statement: live animal exports 2020-21, which has raised a lot of questions in the Region about the direction of the Live Export industry.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said the changes are an important topic in Charters Towers right now.

“Our Region is the Beef Capital of North Queensland. We have between 600,000 – 700,000 head of cattle in our Region, and this forum is important to one of our biggest sectors,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to have all stakeholders along the supply chain, from paddock to port, come together and learn from one another so we are all on the same page.”

Federal Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, the Honourable David Littleproud will be presenting.

“It highlights the significance of the topic, provides an opportunity to hear from the Minister and, in turn, provide feedback to the Minister,” Cr Beveridge said.

Having just returned from Beef Week, Deputy Mayor Sonia Bennetto agrees.

“The timing is right for growth in the beef industry,” she said.

“We need to have a clear understanding at all levels of government to capitalise on this opportunity and ensure sustainability into the future.”

Councillor Bernie Robertson, whose portfolio includes Rural Management, encouraged attendance at the free event.

“I recommend everyone involved in grazing, whether you are a producer, transporter or business associated with the industry, to attend because the proposed changes will have a big knock-on effect,” he said.
