Charters Towers kids encouraged to Move It

Popular after-school sports program Move It NQ is returning to Charters Towers for term three.

Charters Towers Regional Council and Bodyfix Physiotherapy will deliver the free seven-week program for kids aged 10 to 14 years old.

The program is in partnership with the North Queensland Sports Foundation and is aimed at supporting healthier and more active lifestyles.

Councillor Kate Hastie, whose portfolio includes sports and recreation, said it aims to get youth active through structured and supervised after-school activities.

“This is a great initiative for our youth to get out and be involved in organised sport at no cost to them or their family,” she said.

“It has been proven physical activity can help with weight management, building healthier bones, strengthening muscles, and improving heart and lung health as well as reducing the risk of many chronic diseases.

“There’s also mental health and social well being benefits to regular exercise,” Cr Hastie said.

The program has helped introduce the Region’s youth to sports like cricket, soccer, basketball, swimming, athletics, and tee-ball.

Bodyfix Physiotherapy Director Mellissa Salmond said this term kids will get to try mixed martial arts, golf, tennis, dance, Pilates, AFL, and Taekwondo.

“It’s great to have Power Up Dance & Fitness, Charters Towers Tennis Club, Charters Towers Golf Club, Edge Taekwondo Charters Towers, and Charters Towers Demons AFL Club all get involved.

“Gemma Busiko, our highly qualified Exercise Physiologist from Bodyfix will run the program with a focus on injury prevention techniques specific for this age group.

“Our aim is to expose the youth of Charters Towers to a variety of sports and skills to equip them with the knowledge to perform at their best and avoid future injury,” Mrs Salmond said.
