Council adopts 2021 2022 budget
Councillors adopted the latest budget at the Statutory Budget Meeting in Charters Towers today.

Council will invest $13 million in capital works for the 2021/2022 financial year.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said three-quarters of the capital works will be invested in refurbishing and updating existing Council and community assets.

“We are already starting to see a lot of exciting projects and developments being planned for the Charters Towers Region,” he said.

“This budget is focused on ensuring we have strong foundations to help support future economic development for the Region.

“From there we can help to grow and strengthen the Charters Towers area to further improve the sustainability and liveability of our Region,” Mayor Beveridge said.

Some of the major projects outlined in the 2021/2022 Charters Towers Regional Council Budget include:
• $40 million for the completion of 2021 flood damage restoration works
• $3.9 million for roads and drainage capital works
• $3.8 million for capital works on Council and community facilities
• $2.5 million for water and sewerage infrastructure renewals
• $860,000 for a Charters Towers Local Disaster Coordination Centre
• $600,000 for upgrades and repairs to the H.M.Clarke Saleyards
• $500,000 for airport and airstrip upgrades for Charters Towers, Greenvale, and Pentland
• $300,000 for flood warning infrastructure network assets
• $65,300 for playground equipment at the Pentland Sports Reserve
• $65,000 for structural repairs to the Venus Battery
• $24,000 for replacement grating and circulation pump for the Greenvale pool
• $15,000 for a replacement sand filter medium for the Ravenswood pool

Mayor Beveridge said most of the projects are either fully or partially funded through state and federal government grants.

“By using grants, we can minimise the amount needed to be paid by ratepayers,” he said.

General rates for residential and commercial properties are set to increase by 2.5 per cent.
