More than $77,000 will be spent on arts projects in the Charters Towers Region over the next 12 months.

The money is from the 2021-2022 Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

Charters Towers Regional Council will contribute $43,000 to the RADF budget with Arts Queensland to contribute $34,500.

Councillor Graham Lohmann, whose portfolio includes arts and culture, is encouraging locals to start thinking about any arts projects they would like to see in the Region.

“Next year Charters Towers will have its 150 Year Celebrations,” he said.

“It would be great to have some arts projects to help celebrate this milestone.

“These projects can be anything from paintings, murals and statues through to events, workshops and animation of public spaces,” Cr Lohmann said.

RADF is a partnership between Council and the Queensland Government to help support local arts and culture in the Region.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said RADF is a great example of both levels of government working together to deliver on the state’s COVID-19 economic recovery plan, support employment opportunities and create new arts and cultural experiences.

“RADF in 2021–2022 will provide valuable social, health and economic outcomes for regional Queenslanders, and support our Government’s 10-year arts roadmap priorities to strengthen Queensland communities, activate local places and drive social change across the state,” she said.

Councillor Lohmann said Council will start taking applications in late October.

“We want to give the community time to start thinking about what arts projects the Region would benefit from to help celebrate and commemorate 150 years of Charters Towers.”
