Council is proud to announce the adoption of three key documents at this week’s General Meeting to help guide our community's future; the Biosecurity Plan, Flying-Fox Management Plan, and Waste Management Strategy.

The adoption of these documents underscores Council’s dedication to balancing environmental stewardship with the evolving needs of our growing community.  By aligning these strategies with community values and priorities, Council aims to create a healthier, more sustainable, and more liveable region for everyone.

These documents reflect Council’s commitment to protecting local ecosystems, enhancing public health and safety, and improving waste management practices to benefit current and future generations.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said adopting these plans is a significant step toward creating a sustainable, safe, and thriving future for our community.

“They provide a strong framework for tackling key challenges and ensuring we leave a positive legacy for generations to come”, continued Mayor Schmidt.

The Biosecurity Plan establishes clear strategies to prevent, manage, and control biosecurity threats, safeguarding the region’s agriculture, environment, and community wellbeing.  This proactive approach aims to protect the biodiversity and productivity of our local area against invasive pests and diseases.

Developed in collaboration with experts and community input, the Flying-Fox Management Plan sets out measures to balance the conservation of flying-fox populations with the need to minimise impacts on residents.  The plan provides a framework for managing flying-foxes in urban settings within the Charters Towers Region.

The Waste Management Strategy outlines innovative approaches to reduce waste, increase recycling, and manage landfill impacts.  Shaped by community engagement, including a community survey, this strategy reflects shared goals of sustainability and waste reduction and provides a roadmap for Council’s provision of better waste management and resource recovery options.

“The community’s involvement in the Flying-fox Management Plan and the Waste Management Strategy has been essential to ensure the plans truly meet local needs and contribute to our long-term environmental goals”, Mayor Schmidt added.

With these plans now adopted, Council will focus on their implementation and continue to work closely with the community to achieve the outlined objectives.
