Residents, the business community and visitors to the Region urged to stay informed

Back

The Charters Towers Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) remains at Stand Up and reminds residents, the business community and visitors to stay informed.

Council is continuing to monitor weather conditions and flood levels, with up to minute advice from the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), as well as road conditions throughout the Region.

CTLDMG Chair, Mayor Liz Schmidt said everyone needs to stay informed and continue to listen to advice.

“The most pressing issue faced at this time is the Weir intake failure and the ability to produce essential drinking water”, continued Mayor Schmidt.

A Critical Water Alert remains in place, and residents are requested to continue conserving water and restrict usage to essential use only.  This will help ensure that essential supplies are maintained while we work through ongoing challenges caused by the severe weather.  Council currently has a dedicated team working around the clock to address the current situation, and restoration of our water infrastructure is priority.

A number of roads across the region have been impacted and/or closed due to floodwaters, and we urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel.  Please check official sources for updated road closure information and never drive through floodwaters.

During times of disaster, and with more traffic using inland roads due to the state of the Bruce Highway, it is essential that telecommunications are available and working and for that reason, Council is increasing calls for telecom providers to improve services and address connectivity issues within the Region.

Additionally, Council is aware that some flood cameras are currently down due to telecommunication issues and is pressing to have them restored as soon as possible.

Council staff are in regular contact with regional communities that remain isolated to provide support and assess their needs and will continue these efforts until conditions improve and access is restored.

“I’d like to acknowledge and commend the dedicated efforts of our LDMG team, Council staff, and emergency services personnel who have been working around the clock to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.

“Their tireless commitment in these challenging conditions is greatly appreciated”, continued Mayor Schmidt.

Council acknowledges the current water supply issue is also impacting some of our local businesses and will be making direct communication with those businesses to discuss conservation measures to allow a number of them to operate.

All residents, the business community and visitors to the region are reminded to stay informed via official channels, follow emergency advice, and take necessary precautions to keep themselves and their families safe.
