Government Rejects Uni Hub Bid for Charters Towers
Charters Towers Regional Council is deeply disappointed to inform the community that the Charters Towers Country University Working Group’s application for a Regional University Study Hub was unsuccessful in the latest round of government funding.
Despite tireless efforts from Council and the Working Group to present a strong case, backed by overwhelming community support and a clear need for local access to higher education, the application was ultimately not approved.
Mayor Liz Schmidt expressed frustration at the missed opportunity for the region.
“This is a disappointing outcome, not just for Council, but for the entire Charters Towers community who have rallied behind this initiative.
“Our community members deserve the same access to education as those in metropolitan areas and it is disheartening to see our region overlooked despite clear evidence of need,” said Mayor Schmidt.
Despite this setback, Council remains committed to advocating for improved tertiary education pathways and will continue working with stakeholders to explore future opportunities.
“We will not give up - Council will keep pushing for solutions that allow local students to pursue further education without leaving our community,” said Mayor Schmidt.
Council thanks the Working Group and the community for their dedication and encourages ongoing support in efforts to bring higher education opportunities closer to home.
