Flood damaged roads pose a risk for cattle sales

Back

The upcoming Prime and Store Cattle Sale at the Charters Towers Dalrymple (HM Clarke) Saleyards scheduled for Wednesday, 26 February, has been cancelled.

This decision has been made in light of the recent flooding event and the need to protect the region’s road network, truck drivers and cattle.

So far, Charters Towers Regional Council has inspected approx. 25% of the road network, and allowing cattle transport at this stage could lead to further damage, potentially jeopardising future funding.

Councillor Kim Farmer explains the safety and longevity of Charters Towers’ road infrastructure are top priority.

“Without full inspections, there’s a significant risk that cattle trucks could cause further deterioration, which may jeopardise the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and also put the truck drivers at risk with some road conditions unknown.

“The funding recovery process is highly structured and must follow strict guidelines.

“We understand this cancellation is inconvenient for the region however, we must consider the bigger picture, including the transport logistics and welfare of cattle, until we have a clear overview of the road network”, said Cr Farmer.

Council acknowledges the impact the flooding event has had on the community and local economy.

“It’s disappointing to see how this natural disaster has affected so many aspects of our region, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the recovery process and continue to provide regular updates”, said Cr Farmer.

In addition to the challenges posed by the flooding event, Charters Towers residents and businesses are reminded that Level 2 Water Restrictions (High) remain in place due to infrastructure failure at the weir caused by increased river heights.

Although Council has installed a larger temporary pump line to increase capacity, the community is urged to maintain a daily target usage of 8 megalitres (ML) to ensure sustainable water management during this recovery period.

These restrictions, while necessary, highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the region in managing the aftermath of the flood event.
