Charters Towers Regional Council is pleased to welcome the first intake of new apprentices and trainees as part of its Apprentice and Traineeship Program, with more to commence soon.

Three new recruits from the first intake, have commenced their journey, gaining hands-on experience in customer service and fleet services while working towards a nationally recognised qualification - all while earning a wage.

Mayor Liz Schmidt expressed her enthusiasm for the program, highlighting its importance in providing employment pathways for local job seekers.

“Council is proud to offer these valuable opportunities to our community, particularly to young school leavers and those seeking to re-enter the workforce.

“This program not only benefits individuals looking to gain new skills but also strengthens our local workforce for the future.

“By investing in our people, we are investing in the long-term growth and sustainability of our region”, said Mayor Schmidt.

The Apprentice and Traineeship Program is supported by the Queensland Government’s First Start Funding Program under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

The First Start Program is designed to support young Queensland school leavers and disadvantaged job seekers who are at risk of long-term unemployment and through this initiative, Council secured the following positions for the 2024-2025 financial year:

  • Apprentice Diesel Fitters
  • Customer Service and Records Trainee
  • Horticulture Trainee
  • Procurement Trainee
  • Visitor Services and Tourism Trainee
  • Roads Team Member Apprentice

“Council is committed to leading the way in workforce development and ensuring our region continues to thrive”, said Mayor Schmidt.
