Charters Towers Regional Council Chief Executive Officer Martin Drydale, who commenced his role in May 2022, has announced his decision to step down as CEO from Friday, 16 May 2025.

Mr Drydale commenced his tenure with Council as Interim Director Corporate and Community Services in 2022, and quickly made his mark before being appointed as Interim Chief Executive Officer on 16 May 2022 and eventually accepting the permanent position.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said while it was disappointing to receive the CEO’s resignation, Council and the Charters Towers Region are well placed to forge ahead.

“Martin’s leadership and positivity over the past three years is to be commended. He has had a positive influence over workplace culture, enhancing the work-life balance that has been so vocally acknowledged and appreciated by Council staff.

“I would like to personally thank Martin for the smooth transition of the 2024/2028 Council.  Councillors have spoken of the valuable assistance provided to them by Martin that has ensured they can carry out their commitments to the community.

“We have a strong senior leadership team, dedicated workforce and councillors who will continue to work hard for the community they live in,” continued Mayor Schmidt.

Council will now work with the outgoing CEO on the timing of his departure and commence the recruitment process of a new CEO within the obligations of the Local Government Act.

Mr Drydale stated that stepping down was a carefully considered decision and, after thoughtful reflection, he concluded that now is the right time to embark on the next chapter of his life.

“It has been an honour to lead this incredible organisation, and I want to thank the staff and leadership teams for their unwavering support.

“The passion and dedication of the people working within this organisation are what make it truly special, and that passion is at the heart of Council’s success,” Mr Drydale concluded.
