Works start at Rotary Lookout
More people will soon be able to access the lookout at Buckland’s Hill.
The Charters Towers Regional Council has engaged local contractor Cantle Building Pty Ltd to build a disability access ramp to the lookout.
The funding for the project has come from the state’s Works for Queensland (W4Q) program.
Community Facilities Portfolio Chair Councillor Graham Lohmann said the project will open the area to more people in the community.
“Previously the only way to access the lookout was by going up steps or walking up the steep embankment,” he said.
“It meant people who had difficulty walking or who were in a wheelchair were not able to get up there.
“This work will see a full-length ramp go right around Rotary Lookout to make it more accessible for more people,” Cr Lohmann said.
The improvements will also increase safety for Council’s maintenance crews.
“The steep incline of the embankment meant there was a risk for Council’s Infrastructure Services staff when mowing,” Cr Lohmann said.
“These works will take away a lot of that risk to make it safer for our people to maintain the space.”
Construction of the new ramp is expected to take around three months and the lookout will be closed to the public until work is completed.
