Markets to bring festive cheer to Charters Towers

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas with the Community Christmas Markets at the Charters Towers Showground next Wednesday.

The Community Christmas Markets will be filled with market stalls, food vans, children’s entertainment and Christmas cheer.

Community Events portfolio Councillor Graham Lohmann said the market is a great opportunity to buy some unique Christmas gifts.

“Shopping locally means more of the money stays in the Charters Towers Region because we are buying from local businesses,” he said.

The winners of the Council’s 'Light Up Our World' Christmas lights competition will also be announced on the night.

Awards will be handed out for best street and best business decorations.

All competition entries will be added to the Christmas Lights Trail map that will be available to download from Council’s website.

Winners will also be announced for the children’s colouring-in competition.

Cr Lohmann said it will be a positive way to help wrap up what has been a difficult year for a lot of people.

“It is a chance for the community to come together and have a good time.

“They can do some Christmas shopping, enjoy some nice food, and even stay around to watch the Christmas movie ‘Arthur Christmas’ on the big screen,” he said.

COVID-19 safety procedures will be in place for the event.

Council encourages anyone planning on attending the market to download the EVA app before they leave home and to make sure they bring their blankets and chairs.
