Council pushes development permit message

Charters Towers Region’s DIYers, renovators, builders and plumbers need to ask, “do I need a permit for that?”

Charters Towers Regional Council has reminded the community about the importance of doing their homework before starting any building or plumbing works.

Council has pushed the message to ensure community safety while work is undertaken and help residents avoid issues when buying or selling properties.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Aaron Johansson said he wants the community to be aware of development permit requirements.

“There are regulations which govern building and plumbing works that assist owners, builders, and plumbers to ensure their work meets the relevant Australian Standards,” he said.

“Unlawful building and plumbing can have huge impacts on owners when they are trying to buy or sell properties.

“Nobody wants to get to a point where they are trying to sell their house and then realise it does not comply with the legislation.

“Compliance with the Building Act 1975 and Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 ensures the safety of the community and avoids future issues,” Mr Johansson said.

Some of the common building works that require a permit are house renovations, installing or renovating a shed, re-roofing, re-stumping, pool and fence installation, driveways, and building near sewers and drains.

Residents should also seek approval for any new plumbing, septic tank work, and on-site sewerage.

Show Cause Notices, Enforcement Notices and fines may be issued for unlawful building and plumbing works and apply to works carried out by an unlicensed person.
