Move It NQ tender opens
A successful after-school sports and activity program is set to return to Charters Towers later this year.
Charters Towers Regional Council has released the tender for interested groups or individuals to host the Move It NQ Programme for school terms three and four.
Council secured funding from the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network and the North Queensland Sports Foundation to see the program return.
Councillor Kate Hastie, whose portfolio includes Sports and Recreation, said the free after-school program was very well supported.
“It wouldn’t be uncommon to see more than 50 kids attend some of the activities,” she said.
“The program is a great way for our local youth to get out and be involved in organised sport at no cost to them or their families.
“It’s also a great opportunity for some of the Region’s sporting clubs and organisations to spread some awareness about their sport or activity,” Cr Hastie said.
The Move It NQ Programme is aimed at supporting healthier and more active lifestyles through North Queensland communities.
Cr Hastie said it helps to contribute to overall community health and wellbeing through partnerships with local sport, recreation, and health organisations.
“Based on the feedback from local youth there’s a lot of partnerships that can be developed,” she said.
“Some of those areas of interest they told us were rugby league, touch football, archery, golf, soccer, mountain biking, hockey, and basketball.
“However, it is open to almost all sports and recreational activities in the Region and I encourage groups or individuals to consider it,” Cr Hastie said.
