Tourism season kicks off in Charters Towers

The latest stats from Charters Towers’ Visitor Information Centre (VIC) show more people are holidaying here this year.

They’ve recorded a 37 per cent increase in people coming into the VIC in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

Councillor Julie Mathews, whose portfolio includes Tourism Economic Development, said this is positive news as the industry heads into its busiest time of year.

“Peak tourism season is between May and October as people from South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and even southern Queensland come north to escape the cold,” Cr Mathews said.

“In February we launched a new destination brand for the Charters Towers to help capture the core identity of the Region.

“We’re ready for people to come to the Charters Towers Region to Unearth Our Secrets.

“Our VIC has 26 Tourism Ambassadors ready to help tourists plan the perfect holiday here.

“Visitors can also pick up a CD for a self-guided drive of the Charters Towers Region, taking them to 31 different points of interest.

“Those who would prefer to stay around the city centre can grab a copy of our walking tour guide to explore our historic buildings and treasures,” Cr Mathews said.

Cr Mathews is encouraging businesses to adopt the new branding where possible and for locals to embrace visitors to the Region.

“Tourism is everyone’s business,” she said.

“It’s important for everyone to be welcoming to our guests and to show them our unique country hospitality.

“Every touchpoint a visitor has from the servo to the coffee shop is all part of the visitor experience,” Cr Mathews said.
