A voice for our Region

Charters Towers Regional Council has identified nine priorities for the Region in its new advocacy plan.

The 2021 Advocacy Plan, as compiled by the Advocacy Committee, was endorsed by Council at yesterday’s General Meeting. Counci's Advocacy Committee

Mayor Frank Beveridge said it will be sent to all State and Federal Government ministers.

“Council has and continues to advocate strongly for the Region,” he said.

“The plan provides a platform to highlight our key priorities and what support is needed to drive our community forward.

“Through our advocacy, we ensure both Brisbane and Canberra hear our voices and we are not forgotten about.

“Plans like this also give us a seat at the table so we can work constructively with other levels of government to achieve our Region’s needs,” Mayor Beveridge said.

The nine priorities outlined in the 2021 Advocacy Plan are focused on transport infrastructure, improved health services, drought assistance, defence opportunities, improved telecommunications, Financial Assistance Grants, weed management, flying-fox management, and the waste levy.

“It’s no surprise that support for the Gregory Development Road and Flinders Highway tops the list,” Mayor Beveridge said.

“We are also continuing our call for the State Government to fund a new, replacement hospital in Charters Towers, and increase access to vital health services.

“Our advocacy for projects like Big Rocks Weir has helped result in financial commitments from the State and Federal Governments and has seen it labelled as a coordinated project,” he said.

Copies of the Plan will also be available from the Administration Centre, and on Council’s website.
