Some of Australia’s most experienced skateboarders will soon be ripping it up in Charters Towers.

Charters Towers Regional Council and the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network are bringing the Coffee Skateboards NQ Open Skateboarding Competition to the Gold City.

Local skateboarders will have the chance to qualify for the Australian Street Skateboarding Championships, Rumble on the Reef, in Mackay in September.

Councillor Kate Hastie, whose portfolio includes Sport and Recreation, said it’s an exciting opportunity for the Region’s skaters.

“This is a first for the Charters Towers Region,” she said.

“Our Region’s skateboarders will get the chance to compete in a professionally set up and nationally recognised skateboarding event.

The competition is run by ASF members from Townsville, and this event will help the NQ region have more events and build community capability in skateboarding.

“It’s also a great opportunity for anyone wanting to try skateboarding for the first time.

“The event will include a learn-to-skate workshop, free BBQ lunch, and skateboarding competition for 12 and under, 16 and under, and opens.

“Two level two skateboard instructors will also be at the event to help skaters with their beginner fundamentals and help with their competition runs,” Cr Hastie said.

The competition is on Saturday, 19 June 2021 at the Defiance Mill Park skatepark in Charters Towers.

Signed parental consent is required for anyone under the age of 18.
