Early literacy coming to Charters Towers parks

The Excelsior Library is bringing books to the park with the launch of its Story Walk initiative.
It will see pages from a children’s book printed on several signs and installed at Centenary Park and at the duck pond at Lissner Park.
Charters Towers Regional Council will start installing the signs this morning (Thursday, 9 September 2021).
Councillor Graham Lohmann, whose portfolio includes community facilities, said the Excelsior Library’s Story Walk program is about encouraging kids to read.
“You don’t have to go the library to read a book,” he said. “Kids can be playing on the equipment at the park and then they can be strolling around the park reading a book from one of the boards. The initiative is also about encouraging kids and parents to share a book and share the experience of reading it together,” Cr Lohmann said.
Simon Howe’s book Shoosh! is the first to be showcased as part of the Story Walk initiative.
Councillor Lohmann said the stories will be changed regularly. “Every couple of months Council will display a different children’s book. It will tie in with the Queensland-wide First 5 Forever program to provide strong early literacy foundations to children aged 0 to 5,” Cr Lohmann said.
