Rates Notices delayed

Charters Towers Regional Council half-yearly rates notices are scheduled to be mailed out on 18 October 2021.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said the slight delay has been caused due to a recent upgrade of the financial management system.

“We understand this is frustrating for the community, however, we want to ensure the rates data is correct as we complete the transition from the old system to the new one. Ratepayers will still have the 30-day discount period, which will end on 22 November. The discount can save the ratepayer about six per cent on their rates if they pay before the discount period ends. The second instalment rates will be issued in March 2022 so that property owners will not have to pay two rates closer than normal,” said the Mayor.

Rates are the main source of income for the Charters Towers Regional Council and help ensure it can continue to deliver services to the community.

“Our Council area is the fourth largest in Queensland with an extensive road network and a relatively small ratepayer base,” he said.

“Our challenge is having to maintain and upgrade infrastructure for an area close to the size of Tasmania with a very limited budget. More than 56 per cent of the money received from rates and utilities goes into the Regions road, drainage, water and sewerage network. The remaining amount has to cover things like community services, environmental and waste management, economic development, community facilities, parks, cemeteries and much more,” Mayor Beveridge said.

Discounts and rebates are available for pensioners. To check your eligibility or for more information about rates notices, payment options, or how to sign up to receive your rates notices via email, go to Council’s website or call the Rates team on 4761 5300.
