Locals urged to choose to reuse

Charters Towers Region residents are being encouraged to join in a nationwide festival of pre-loved stuff.

Registrations are open now to be part of Australia’s largest sustainability and community festival, the Garage Sale Trail.

This year’s festival has been remodelled to cater for COVID-19 and will take place over two weekends, 13-14 and 20-21 November.

Councillor Alan Barr, whose portfolio includes waste management, said the festival encourages residents to sell, shop and learn about the circular economy.

“It’s a win-win for our environment and residents’ pockets,” he said.

“A circular economy means stuff is kept in use for as long as possible, delivering the highest value it can, for as long as it can.

“Last year’s event saw close to $11,000 change hands in the Charters Towers Region and we are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year,” Cr Barr said.

Close to a tonne of items were spared from going to the Charters Towers landfill because of the 2020 Garage Sale Trail.

“More than 770 locals participated as either shoppers, sellers or took part in the free online classes,” Cr Barr said.

“Over 14,000 second-hand items were put up for sale locally and the average household made around $680.

“Residents who want to declutter are encouraged to register and potentially earn a few dollars for their unwanted items while also saving it from going to the local landfill.”
