Weir Recreation and Ski Park Reopened

Boaties and skiers can once again hit the water at the Weir Recreation & Ski Park located upstream of the Burdekin Weir.

The area was closed off following the significant rain event earlier this year.

The heavy rain caused damage to the guidance buoys in the river and to the infrastructure around the access point at Dave Chapman Park.

Cr Graham Lohmann, whose portfolio includes community facilities, said it posed a safety risk for users.

“Marine Safety Queensland and Council have worked hard to ensure the section of river is safe to use again, with a marine surveyor completing an assessment of the area,” he said.

The Ski Park was opened to recreational use, including skiing and powered watercraft, in 2019 and is popular with tourists and locals alike.

“Although everything has been done to ensure user safety, it’s up to the community to be responsible on the water and to understand the risks when skiing.

“All activities are regulated and Marine Safety Queensland will be enforcing the rules.” Cr Lohmann said.

“We encourage everyone to get out and use it again in a safe and responsible manner,” he said.
