150 Year celebrations to kick off at Christmas Fair

The Region’s 150 Year celebrations will commence tonight at the Christmas Fair with a retelling of Jupiter Mosman’s account of his chance discovery of gold.

The discovery was soon followed by Charters Towers being declared a goldfield in 1872.

Deputy Mayor Graham Lohmann, whose portfolio includes community events, is encouraging residents to support the Fair and join the celebrations.

“150 years is a significant milestone in our history, and we are looking forward to celebrating with a great range of activities hosted by Council.

“We hope these activities will also attract visitors and bring former residents back to Charters Towers,” he said.

As part of the celebrations, Council has produced a 2022 Commemorative Calendar, which includes events to celebrate our past 150 Years.

Commencing this month and covering a 13-month period, each month of the Calendar contains some iconic images of people, places and events that helped shape our Region.

The images, along with information and quotes about our diverse and rich history, make this calendar truly unique and a wonderful memento of our 150 Year celebrations.

December 2021 is dedicated to Jupiter Mosman, the person recognised as discovering gold near the base of Towers Hill.

“For the month of December, one calendar per household will be provided free of charge. They will be available from the Fair, or Council’s Administration Centre.

“From January 2022 the calendar will be available to purchase from the Visitor Information Centre,” said Cr Lohmann.

The community is encouraged to register their 150 Year events on the Visit Charters Towers website at www.visitcharterstowers.com.au/add-your-event so that locals and visitors can keep up to date with celebrations as they are planned.

Council has also created a dedicated Facebook page @ChartersTowers150 for all of Council’s 150 Year celebrations.
