Funding for New Aquatic Centre
A new pool in Charters Towers will be delivered thanks to funding from Queensland Government via the Resources Community Infrastructure Fund (RCIF).
Council has been successful in receiving $7.8 million to provide a new aquatic centre to replace the 51-year-old Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool and upgraded facilities.
Councillor Kate Hastie, whose portfolio includes pools, said the announcement of the funding is exciting news for all.
“We are very fortunate to be given the opportunity to upgrade this facility, which has needed major repairs and upgrades for quite some time.
“The proposed upgrades will provide a contemporary facility that will be a great asset and attraction for our community,“ she said.
As part of the funding submission, Council submitted concept ideas that included a new aquatic facility, new free form toddlers pool and wet play area, new water filtration system, refurbished amenities, enhanced spectator seating and a new lighting system.
Once the funding agreement has been signed and timelines identified, Council plans to undertake community consultation for feedback and ideas to help guide planning for the final design.
“By undertaking community consultation, Council hopes to gain insight into what the community ultimately would like to see at our new facility.
“It will be exciting to see what feedback and ideas are put forward and, taking the budget into consideration, what the final design and features look like.
"When this project is finalised, the new facility will provide an amazing sporting, training and recreational venue as well as a health and social hub that the community will be proud of,” Cr Hastie said.
Council is looking forward to delivering another project for the community.
