Mural to bring Arts to the Outdoors

A mural depicting elements of life in Charters Towers is being painted on the southern external wall of the iconic Arthur Titley Centre to stimulate Arts in the Outdoors for the town’s 150 Years Celebrations.

Townsville based artist Garth Jankovic is creating the eye-catching image on the building following extensive consultation with Council and the Charters Towers Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) Committee.

The mural will include vibrant images of flora, fauna, people and landscapes from the Charters Towers region.

Measuring approximately 5 metres high and 20 metres long, the mural is set to make an impact for locals and visitors alike travelling along Mosman Street.

Deputy Mayor Graham Lohmann, whose portfolio includes Arts and Culture, said the mural is a RADF Initiative aiming to bring ‘Arts in the Outdoors’ in the community.

“The brief for the artist was to make the mural bright and colourful and representative of the region using local content, relatable characters and landmarks. The final concept design certainly delivers on that brief.”

Regional mural artist Garth Jankovic will be involving locals in many aspects of delivering the mural. One local emerging artist will be paid as an assistant throughout the project. Mr Jankovic is encouraging schools and community groups to join in the process and is sourcing supplies and equipment locally.

“RADF promotes the role and value of arts, culture, and heritage as key drivers of diverse and inclusive communities,” Cr Lohmann said.

“The ‘Arts in the Outdoors’ Initiative is envisioned to instil community pride and also create new experiences for visitors to the region.”

RADF is a partnership between the Charters Towers Regional Council and the Queensland Government to help support local arts and culture in the region.
