Extensions to popular walking track to commence

Works on the Mosman Street Walking Track Extension are set to commence next week with the construction of the Stubley Street Carpark as part of Stage 1a.

The project forms part of the Mosman Creek Corridor and Towers Hill Walking Track Master Plan and aims to promote tourism, enrich recreational opportunities and improve the amenity of the location.

Stage 1a of the project will consist of the abovementioned 5-bay carpark and a 54 metre boardwalk that connects the carpark to a raised viewing platform over an existing open mine shaft, including lighting and signage.

Mayor Frank Beveridge is excited to see the works commence on the project which will showcase the Region’s gold mining history.

“It is fortuitous that works on this attraction are to commence this year, the year we celebrate 150 years since the Charters Towers Goldfields were declared.

“Creating a viewing platform over an existing open mine shaft is something that has been planned for some time.

“Once finished, we hope this will become a ‘must see’ experience for both locals and tourists alike, as a way of honouring all those that helped build our Region,” Mayor Beveridge said.

Construction work on Stubley Street, between Dawn and Day Streets, is expected to be completed by early July 2022, weather permitting.

Road users and pedestrians are reminded to follow all signage when moving through worksites.

The project was identified as a key project in the 2020-2024 Priority Projects Prospectus in an effort to secure funding to ensure economic development and growth for our Region.

The project is funded through the Australian Governments Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI).
