Tree Replacement at Cemetery

Council will soon begin a removal of troublesome conifer trees at the Charters Towers Cemetery (Lynd Cemetery), replacing them with more suitable varieties.

At the time of initial planting, the Book Leaf Conifers were recommended as a dwarf variety that would be suitable for a cemetery location, however, time has proved this is not the case.

Due to their larger than anticipated size, the trees are now causing extensive damage to graves and immediate surrounds, as well as being a maintenance problem.

Councillor Barr says the removal of these trees and replacement with varieties that are fit for purpose will be beneficial to all.

“Although the removal of the trees is regrettable, seeing the resting sites of our loved ones damaged due to the trees growing significantly larger than expected can be unsettling for some.

“Planting of suitable plants will not only remove the current issues around ground movement, it will also improve the amenity of the Cemetery,” said Cr Barr.

Two dwarf plant varieties (Ixora ‘Dwarf Red’ and Callistemon ‘Little John’) have been specifically chosen for their suitability for the location, tolerance to local conditions and low maintenance requirements.

The replacement plants have been purchased and will be planted once the conifers have been removed.

Council have engaged contractors to assist with their removal, including stump grinding to remove the base root, with works proposed to commence on 19 September 2022.

“Family members who have loved ones in the Cemetery should be assured that staff involved in the removal will ensure the works will be undertaken with the utmost care and consideration.

“Photographs of any sites that may be impacted, including trinkets and adornments, will be photographed and small items removed for safe keeping, and returned to their original positions once works have been completed,” Cr Barr said.

Whilst all care will be taken during these works, Council encourages anyone who wishes to temporarily remove items placed around grave sites to do so until works are complete.

Anyone with concerns regarding these upcoming works is encouraged to contact Council on 07 4761 5300.
