It’s time to shine a spotlight on our local heroes

Back

Do you know someone in the Charters Towers region whose generosity and commitment make them a local hero?

The 2024 Australia Day Awards offers the perfect opportunity to shine the light on those extraordinary individuals and organisations that go above and beyond.

The Awards are a way to formally recognise our local heroes, and Council is urging the community to nominate those exceptional individuals or groups whose dedication stands out and makes a difference.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said the Charters Towers Region thrives because of the locals who believe in making a difference, in ways big and small.

"For many community champions, it is not about seeking the limelight or praise; their motives are simply caring and wanting better for their community.

“These folks are the backbone of our community, with many volunteering their time and effort towards multiple endeavours,” said Mayor Beveridge.

Nominations are now open, and the community is encouraged to nominate those they believe are deserving of acknowledgement.

There are eight (8) categories available for nominations:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Community Event of the Year
  • Sportsperson of the Year
  • Young Sportsperson of the Year
  • Sports Administrator of the Year
  • Cultural Person of the Year
  • Young Cultural Person of the Year

The nomination process is a simple one that can be completed online in a matter of minutes.  For those who prefer paper submissions, hard copies of the Nomination Form are available at Council’s Administration Centre.

Nominations will close at 4pm on Wednesday, 6 December 2023.

All nominees will be invited to attend Council’s 2024 Australia Day Awards Ceremony on 25 January 2024, where winners will be announced.
